Belle Rustique

Just right for Valentine's Day (or any day you want to surprise someone with a designer original piece of wearable art). This long oval African Bloodstone has numerous deep red splashes of color on a mottled mossy green background. This stone is one of my most popular finds--I've made pendants, necklaces and rosaries using this unusual material--and it's always a hit. The cab is thick with a nice polish. I've border wrapped it using six lengths of 21 gauge sterling wire, using a decorative swirled topper to set off the design. It would also make a great gift for a March birthday girl as it's the traditional March birthstone. The pendant measures 3" from top of bail and is approximately 7/8" wide.
Note: African Bloodstone, sometimes called Seftonite, is a green jasper dotted with bright red spots of iron oxide. It was treasured in ancient times and served for a long time as the birthstone for March. This attractive chalcedony quartz is also known as heliotrope because in ancient times polished stones were described as reflecting the sun: perhaps the appearance of the gem reminded the ancients of the red setting sun, mirrored in the ocean.
