Transvaal jade is not jade, but rather a a green to gray massive variety of grossular garnet. This particular stone has banding in shades of green and light green to grey-green. It has a domed surface and a nice polish. I've border wrapped it in 21 gauge sterling wire using my signature swirls and curls topper design. Enjoy. It can be distinguished from jadeite or nephrite by its high refractive index. Grossular garnet has a refractive index of 1.72 to 1.73, a hardness of 6-7.5.
