Rhodochrosite derives its pink color from manganese. This heart-shaped cabochon has gorgeous bands of deep, semi-transparent pink and white. In its pure form, it is a rose-red color, but impure specimens can be shades of pink to pale brown with streaks of white as in this stone mixed with the iron carbonate mineral siderite. Its Mohs hardness varies between 3.5 and 4. Rhodochrosite occurs in veins associated with manganese, copper, silver and lead.
