This is another of my "Valentine's Day" pieces--African Bloodstone with rosy red splotches on a forest green background. The cab is thick, highly polished, with a lot going on in the stone. I border wrapped it using six lengths of 21 gauge sterling wire, using a detailed topper to set off the design. It would also make a great gift for a March birthday girl as it's the traditional march birthstone. The pendant measures 2 1/4" from top of bail and is 1 5/8" wide.
Note: African Bloodstone, sometimes called Seftonite, is a green jasper dotted with bright red spots of iron oxide. It was treasured in ancient times and served for a long time as the birthstone for March. This attractive chalcedony quartz is also known as heliotrope because in ancient times polished stones were described as reflecting the sun: perhaps the appearance of the gem reminded the ancients of the red setting sun, mirrored in the ocean.
