Belle Rustique

This is a custom piece designed for someone dear to me and is her traditional birthstone. I found this gem in Idaho and was enchanted with the gorgeous array of colors--lots of red splashes on a forest green background that diffuses into gold. It is so beautiful, it needed little embellishment. I border-wrapped it in sterling silver with a back swirl that ends with tiny "claws" in front. The pendant measures 2 3/4" from top of bail and is 1 1/16" wide.
Note: Bloodstone, green jasper dotted with bright red spots of iron oxide, was treasured in ancient times and served for a long time as the birthstone for March. This attractive chalcedony quartz is also known as heliotrope because in ancient times polished stones were described as reflecting the sun: perhaps the appearance of the gem reminded the ancients of the red setting sun, mirrored in the ocean. It has been used as an aphrodisiac in India and is mined there and in Australia as well as the US.
